The COP16 on Biodiversity, held in Cali (Colombia), did not reach an agreement on how to finance the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework for Biodiversity Protection, although it did endorse the parties' commitment to accelerating this process and ensuring the protection of a significant portion of the world’s ecosystems. Positive developments include the announcement of the Cali Fund, aimed at delivering the benefits from the use of genetic resources in biodiversity, or the agreement of a program to recover 100 million hectares of deteriorated land in Africa.
Moreover, COP16 will be remembered for the recognition of the role of women and local communities as well as Afro-descendant people as guardians of biodiversity. Two weeks of work, with over 900,000 people from 190 different countries, united under the 'Peace with Nature’ slogan.
