We build the first refinery in Tenerife and become the first Spanish supplier of marine fuels. This same year, we sign our first agreements with distributors in Africa and Portugal.
We began the exploration and production business with the creation of the Compañía de Investigación y Explotación Petrolífera (CIEPSA).
We continue to expand our E&P business and build the first well to be operated in Spain, the Oliana-1.
We take another step in bringing energy to people. We become the first Spanish manufacturer of lubricants.
We seal our commitment to quality. We are pioneers in installing a platforming unit in Spain to improve the characteristics of our gasoline, and we create the first petrochemicals aromatics units in Europe.
Cepsa’s globalization comes to the fore. We work with multi-national leaders to strengthen our petrochemicals business. We start to produce biodegradable detergents and the raw material used to make polyester.
We open our first base outside Spain in Portugal through the establishment of Cepsa Portuguesa S.A.
We build the Gibraltar-San Roque Refinery, currently Spain’s largest refinery and one of the main petrochemicals sites in Europe.
We expand quickly both in and outside Spain. We build a network of commercial offices and subsidiaries in different European countries such as the United Kingdom.
We strengthen our chemicals business through the full acquisition of our petrochemicals subsidiaries INTERQUISA and PETRESA.
We open doors to new markets. We start collaborations in the Persian Gulf, and IPIC becomes a shareholder in Cepsa.
We invest in the future. We make the largest investment in our history through the expansion of our mid-distillates capacity at La Rábida Refinery.
We start up the MEDGAZ project, through a 20% stake.
Sovereign wealth fund IPIC gives us the final drive needed to become a global energy company of choice by buying all Cepsa’s shares and becoming our sole shareholder.
We continue to expand our E&P business in Malaysia and Thailand. We also inaugurated Cepsa’s offices in Abu Dhabi.
We open our new headquarters at the Cepsa Tower in Madrid, one of the most modern and innovative buildings in Europe. We start our oil production facilities in Peru.
We start our growth plan in Asia with the opening of our plant in Shanghai, becoming the world’s second largest producer of phenol and acetone. That same year we buy a chemicals plant in Germany through our Sinarmas Cepsa joint venture.
We intensify our social commitment by creating Fundación Cepsa, a non-profit entity to care for the communities and environments where we work and promote initiatives to help people in their daily lives.
IPIC and Mubadala merge to form a new company: Mubadala Investment Company.
The Sinar Mas Cepsa joint venture inaugurates its first oleochemicals plant in Indonesia.
We are the first company to combine electricity, natural gas and fuel services in one offering: Cepsa Hogar.
The Carlyle Group completes the acquisition of a 37% shareholding in Cepsa from Mubadala.

We bring energy to every reality. We are pioneers in selling butane bottles at our service stations.
We grow our business in Canada. We construct our second petrochemicals plant in the country, INTERQUISA Canada Inc.
We start the MEDGAZ project to build a gas pipeline between Algeria and Europe via Spain, and continue to invest in E&P through our second oil field in Algeria.
We strengthen our presence in Canada with the construction of the new INTERQUISA plant.
We are committed to our social and environmental surroundings. We publish Cepsa’s first sustainability report.
We grow our international bunkering operations through the creation of Cepsa Marine Fuels (CMF).
We establish Cepsa Química to create a sole business area and integrate our INTERQUISA, PETRESA and ERTISA plants. We also start our business in Colombia.
We grow our presence in North Africa. The country’s authorities approve the natural gas development project at Timimoun in Algeria.
We sign an agreement with the French company Elf Aquitaine.
We buy 100% of the lubricants company ERTOIL and Cepsa’s third refinery, La Rábida.
We acquire a 25% stake in CAMPSA.
A year of one of the most important landmarks in Cepsa’s history, following the oil discovery in Algeria. This same year, we buy ERTISA, a petrochemicals company that produces cumene, phenol and acetone.
We take another step forward in making our petrochemicals operations more international after building our first industrial plant in North America, PETRESA Canada Inc.
Besides starting our oil production business in Algeria, we start to sell propane and butane to houses.
We continue to innovate to improve people’s day-to-day lives. We design a new stainless steel butane bottle, lighter and safer than a traditional bottle. This same year we create Cepsa Panama.
We don’t stop growing, and reach South America. We acquire the controlling stake in the Brazilian company DETEN Chemicals.
