The company has joined the Extremadura Energy Cluster to promote renewable energies in the region
- The company will develop two photovoltaic projects in Mérida and La Nava de Santiago with a capacity of 375 MW, creating up to 670 jobs during their construction
- Construction on the two plants, Cepsa's first renewable energy projects in the region, is scheduled for end-2025 and once in operation they will produce an estimated 785 GWh of energy per year, avoiding the emission of 315,000 tons of CO2
- As part of its “Sumamos Energías” (Combining Energies) program, Cepsa aims to integrate these facilities into the territory, strengthening job creation, training and environmental protection with the active participation of municipalities and local groups
Work on both projects is scheduled to begin by the end of 2025. Once operational, these facilities will produce an estimated 785 GWh of energy per year, avoiding the emission of 315,000 tons of CO2 annually.
As part of the presentation of these developments, Cepsa has become a member of the Extremadura Energy Cluster. The ceremony, held today in Mérida, was attended by Gerónimo de Angulo, Cepsa's Director of Photovoltaic Project Development, and Vicente Sánchez, President of the Extremadura Energy Cluster.
Gerónimo de Angulo said: "We are proud to be in Extremadura and contribute to the development of renewable energies in the region while continuing to promote our sustainable energy ecosystem, in line with our 2030 ‘Positive Motion’ strategy. To this end, we are committed to the deployment of projects that are integrated into the environment and also contribute to socio-economic development and environmental protection. Through our ‘Sumamos Energías’ program, we want to generate a positive impact on the local environment, getting citizens involved and promoting collaboration with the public administration.”
According to Vicente Sanchez, president of the Extremadura Energy Cluster: “The fact that a company like Cepsa is committed to Extremadura is excellent news for our Autonomous Community, due to its business, economic and employment impact. Likewise, its adhesion to the Extremadura Energy Cluster is a great satisfaction for us, which encourages us even more in our work, and shows the boost that renewables represent for the development of our region, as well as the weight we have at a national level in the sector".
By implementing its 2030 strategy, Positive Motion, the company aims to become a leader in sustainable mobility, with the deployment of the largest ultra-fast recharging network in Spain and Portugal and the development of green hydrogen and second-generation biofuels. All this will enable Cepsa to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 55% and the carbon intensity index of its products by 15-20% by 2030, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
These two photovoltaic projects in Extremadura are in addition to the renewable energy portfolio that the company is promoting in Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha and the Madrid region. Cepsa's goal for this decade is to develop a renewable portfolio of 7 GW.
Positive impact on the local environment
Through the “Sumamos Energías” program, Cepsa will work hand in hand with all public administration bodies that want to join in the design and implementation of actions that generate value and promote socioeconomic development and the natural capital of their municipality.
“Sumamos Energías” is a differential program, based on co-design and transparent and proactive dialogue, which seeks to create a tractor effect in the territory and maximum social and environmental integration. Each of these lines of action involves a series of initiatives linked to the nature of the projects and adapted to the needs of each locality and its neighbors.
One of these initiatives is the creation of a local sustainable development fund set up and managed with the municipalities to finance sustainable investments and actions aimed at job creation, training and environmental protection in the municipality.
By developing projects for the generation of renewable energy and promoting the “Sumamos Energías” program, Cepsa also contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. Specifically, it contributes to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
