- Airlines like Air Europa, Iberia, Vueling, Air Nostrum, TUI, Wizz Air and easyJet are already using this fuel in their flights
- Moeve produces SAF at the La Rábida Energy Park in Palos de la Frontera
- By using existing production facilities, Moeve has been able to optimize resources and speed up SAF production without the need for new infrastructure
SAF, a sustainable fuel produced in La Rábida from waste such as used cooking oil, has been essential for airlines such as Air Europa, Iberia, Vueling, Air Nostrum, TUI, Wizz Air and easyJet among others to use this fuel for their flights. This second-generation biofuel can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90% over its entire lifecycle compared to traditional kerosene. At the moment it is the only practical solution for really reducing emissions from aviation.
Álvaro Macarro, Director of Sustainable Aviation, highlighted that "with the introduction of the European ReFuelEU Aviation mandate, which requires all airlines to use 2% SAF in their flights starting January 1 this year, gradually increasing to 70% by 2050, the role of the La Rábida Energy Park will be vital in supporting our clients in the sector in achieving their decarbonization targets." To add to that, Moeve has set up strategic alliances with several companies in the sector to ensure a constant and efficient supply of SAF. These partnerships have driven research and development of new technologies when it comes to the production of sustainable fuels.
Director Jorge Acitores of the La Rábida Energy Park commented: "We are very proud of the progress made in the production of SAF in La Rábida." This achievement is the result of Moeve's commitment to sustainability and innovation. The capacity of our facilities as well as the experience and excellence of the people who are part of our teams enable us to lead the way towards a cleaner and more efficient future in the aviation sector."
The La Rábida Energy Park has become a pivotal hub for SAF production in Spain, renowned for its innovation and the flexibility of its facilities. The use of existing production units has enabled Moeve to optimize resources and accelerate the production of SAF before having the new infrastructure available. Moreover, Moeve is already building its new second-generation biofuels plant in Huelva, which will involve an investment of up to 1.2 billion euros. The new plant at the La Rábida Energy Park will feature a flexible production capacity of 500,000 tons per year, producing both renewable diesel and SAF. The plant is scheduled to begin operating in 2026, establishing the Energy Park as the largest industrial complex for second-generation biofuel production in southern Europe. This milestone underscores Moeve's commitment to leveraging Spain's potential as a leader in SAF production.
This achievement, which boosts the Positive Motion strategy, with which Moeve began the transformation of its facilities in 2022, not only puts Huelva on the map of the energy transition, but also strengthens the company's role as a benchmark in the sustainable fuels industry.
