What is a near miss and why is it important?
A near miss is an incident that in slightly different circumstances could have caused harm to people, equipment or the environment.
They are dangerous, but they also represent an opportunity to optimize safety measures and learn how to prevent accidents more effectively.
How to identify them. Examples
A near miss happens more often than it seems, and you may have witnessed some. Have you ever had the feeling of narrowly avoiding an accident? If so, you have experienced one first-hand.
Here are some examples:- There is a fault with a safety system.
- A ceiling fan falls to the floor, close to several people.
- Someone slips on the floor but doesn't sustain any injuries.
- A small amount of a toxic product leaks but nobody gets hurt.
- In a workshop, someone trips over a cable but nobody gets hurt.
- The controls or brakes on a vehicle fail but no collision or damage occurs.
- Equipment falls to the ground from above.
