- Rosendo Rivero, director of the San Roque Energy Park, and Gerardo Landaluce, president of the Port of Algeciras Bay Authority, sign a partnership on sustainability
The document was signed by the director of Cepsa's San Roque Energy Park, Rosendo Rivero, and the president of APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, who reviewed the company's latest projects at its Algeciras Bay facilities. These were carried out under the Good Environmental Practices Agreement signed by the two entities a decade ago, pursuant to Article 245.1 of Royal Legislative Decree 2/2011, approving the recast text of the Law on Ports and the Merchant Marine. Among these actions are plans to minimize emissions during ship loading at the Energy Park pier; measures to speed up the detection of potential defects in the pipes at the maritime terminal, and initiatives to obtain real-time information on the tension in the mooring lines of the ships at the single-buoy mooring facilities. Other key projects for Cepsa include the announcement of the green hydrogen corridor between Algeciras and Rotterdam, the start-up of the first hybrid electric-diesel barge to operate in the Algeciras Bay to supply ships, and the first successful test of advanced biofuels in maritime transport.
After signing the document, the director of the San Roque Energy Park, Rosendo Rivero, explained that the industrial center was adhering to the strategy "because our own 2030 Positive Motion Strategy is very much in line with it. We are signing this today to not only support, but also join the Port of Algeciras, one of our allies in the energy transition at Cepsa right now, in all these steps towards the sustainability of the port facilities in the Algeciras Bay. Partnerships like these allow us to make faster and more robust progress on the energy transition."
The president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, highlighted the importance of one of the main clients and benchmarks in the Port of Algeciras adhering to the APBA's Green Strategy. “This support from the Cepsa Energy Park consolidates our commitment to the growth and sustainable development of operations in the Port of Algeciras,” he said. In addition to the commitment of the companies operating in the Andalusian port, Landaluce highlighted measures taken by the APBA to implement the Green Strategy. These include switching electric companies to use 100% renewable energy; the partial renewal of its official vehicle fleet with electric vehicles; the installation of solar panels on its buildings to generate its own power; and the installation of self-sustaining canopies using circular energy, among other projects.
The Port Authority's Green Strategy includes 12 commitments to environmental, social and economic sustainability that the institution wants to extend to the entire port community, ranging from the fight against climate change to the reduction of inequalities. At the end of 2022, AENOR certified APBA's Green Strategy based on its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda. The APBA thus became the first port authority in the state system to obtain certification of its sustainable development strategy.
